New focus on diagnosing and treating brain injuries

Over the last few months, increasing attention has been paid to the long-term brain damage caused to professional football players over the course of their careers. While repeated blows and trauma can cause long-term brain damage, it is also well-known that one severe head trauma caused by an accident or collision can also leave a victim with a traumatic brain injury.

Symptoms of a severe brain injury include depression, mood swings, and personality changes that are often noticed by family members. Now scientists are researching the cause of TBI to prevent suicide and death. A disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a further consequence of TBI and is linked to repeated injuries.

Prevent fatal accidents by taking the fun out of driving for teens

Most teenagers look forward to getting their driver's license for a couple of reasons. One is that they like the freedom of being able to get from place to place without being chauffeured around by their parents. Another popular reason to be stoked about a license is that teens see it as a fun way to hang out with their friends, play music and get around town.

Based on the results of a AAA study about teen driver safety, parents should do what they can to take the fun out of driving for their 16- and 17-year olds. The kids might put up a fight, but by severely limiting the number of young passengers teens can drive around, a parent or community is potentially saving lives from preventable car accidents that are often caused by driver distraction.

Teen driving led to Florida car accident, teenagers' injuries

Getting a driver's license as a teenager is one of the most exciting moments in life up to that point. While having a license to drive ushers in an exciting time in a teen's life, it also ushers in danger. Inexperience behind the wheel often leads to car accidents, and it looks like inexperience and distraction led to a recent Florida accident.

"She just pulled out in front of me out of nowhere," reports a 35-year-old driver who was driving her car with her son inside when they were hit by a teen driver. Fortunately, no one was killed in the two-car accident, though a couple of teens from the other car sustained injuries and needed hospital attention.

Do lower prices lead to higher risk of injury within stores?

These days just about everyone is looking for a sale. The economy is tough and finding a deal on consumer goods is an easy, sometimes fun way to get by in this time of economic hardship.

For many American consumers, the most fun day of shopping is Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving consists of all kinds of stores offering big price cuts on their goods. Wal-Mart is a popular Black Friday destination for shoppers, but do their reduced prices increase the risk of slip-and-fall accidents amid the shopping rush?

May the month of May usher in motorcycle safety in Florida

Though it tends to be relatively nice weather in Florida year-round, May serves as the month that traffic safety officials use to spread a nationwide message regarding motorcycle safety in preparation for the warm summer months. It is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month in Florida and across the U.S.

It isn't only motorcyclists who are responsible to prevent motorcycle accidents. All drivers play an integral role in preventing any kind of traffic accident, and motorcycle crashes are very often the result of a standard vehicle driver's carelessness behind the wheel.

Senior drivers more likely to cause left-turn accidents

It is natural for adult children to start to worry about their parents as they age. It isn't uncommon for the question to come up about whether an aging parent should still be able to drive. It's a sensitive conversation, prompted by the desire to keep loved ones and other motorists safe. But limiting a person's driving abilities also makes a significant impact on his life, freedom and mobility.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that older drivers in Florida are involved in a particular type of car accident more often than younger drivers: left-turn accidents. Navigating left turns is generally more complex than navigating other turns. Add that to the effect that aging has on older drivers' abilities behind the wheel, and experts suggest that it might be best for drivers over 70 to avoid left turns entirely.

Disney's Tower of Terror in Florida leads to rider's health terror

Walt Disney World. The idea of the classic theme park brings a smile to most people's faces and brings up fond memories of a childhood visit to the magical place. For at least one older visitor who took a trip to the park, however, his memory of his Disney experience isn't a positive one.

Back in 1998, a 68-year-old man visited the Florida park and rode one of its most popular rides: Tower of Terror. The ride was inspired by The Twilight Zone. It's designed like an elevator shaft that crawls up and up and up, only to drop down the high altitude at a quick pace. That drop, according to the past visitor's premises liability lawsuit, caused him to suffer from a stroke.

Prom preparation: Dress, hair, nails and driver safety talks

It's a magical season for many teenagers in Florida and throughout the country. Some teens look forward to prom by the time school starts in the fall, and prom season is finally here. That means buying dresses, renting tuxes, getting nails done, hair fixed and having "the talk."

Parents will often worry about their teens' dates and making sure nothing inappropriate happens, but that isn't all there is to worry about. Traffic safety must be a top concern for parents, schools, law enforcement and teens around prom season. Too often, communities see the loss of young people to drunk driving or distracted driving accidents during this anticipated time of year.

Astros fan out for the season after slip and fall

The fans may want to come to the game, but it is a professional team who invites them into the Stadium whether it is located in Florida or another state. One fan answered the call of the Houston Astros, but when he walked into the stadium on April 7, 2010 he got more than he bargained for.

As the man was walking towards the seat designated on his ticket stub, he slipped on something wet. When his feet went out from under him, he fell to the floor. The slip-and-fall accident, he says caused serious injuries.

Elderly Florida drivers required to renew license every 6 years

Florida law requires that drivers over the age of 80 renew their license every six years -- a period shorter than required for younger drivers. The requirement was one way to find a balance between a person's right to drive and the risk that aging drivers pose in terms of car accidents that leave themselves and others injured.

The issue continues to remain highly controversial. The elderly often get treated like children even though many have lived tough lives, accomplishing more than their younger generations have yet achieved during life. But the truth is that a lot of serious car accidents are caused by elderly drivers. In fact, drivers over the age of 85 cause more serious accidents than inexperienced teen drivers do.
